Join us as we bring together the New York State Enhanced Multidisciplinary Teams (E-MDTs) to enhance knowledge on topics related to elder abuse, strengthen partnerships and increase collaboration across the statewide E-MDT network.


Featuring

This year Erica and Fred will facilitate the conference opening, an emerging topics session, and the closing session in order to:
• Ignite our enthusiasm for a day of learning and collaboration;
• Engage us in conversations about emerging topics and resource sharing related to elder abuse;
• Help us form new connections and discover new opportunities with each other; and
• Ensure each person leaves with meaningful insights and clear next steps.

Workshops

Complexities of Capacity and Decision-Making Abilities

In this workshop, Dr. Mott will share her expertise as a geriatric psychiatrist, focusing on the complexities of capacity and decision-making abilities as well as neurological and psychiatric conditions that can affect capacity. She will delve into her thought process, detailing what she listens for and the questions she asks during an E-MDT case presentation. The discussion will encompass the assessment of medical and financial decision-making capacity, including how to identify when a capacity assessment is needed and the purpose and reasoning behind the assessment.

Prosecuting Power of Attorney Abuse: A Case Review

Join Schenectady County ADA William Lemon for an insightful workshop on the successful prosecution of a financial exploitation case involving Power of Attorney abuse against an older adult in NYS. Learn about the investigative techniques, legal strategies, and collaborative efforts with law enforcement and other E-MDT members that led to a conviction. This session will provide valuable information on navigating the complexities of prosecuting such cases to protect vulnerable populations.

Name that Scam

Name that Scam takes a fun spin on a serious topic. In this engaging and educational workshop, inspired by the classic game show "Name that Tune," participants will combine the excitement of a game show with the critical skills of scam and fraud prevention and detection. This session will not only enhance your ability to recognize and avoid different types of scams but also equip you with practical knowledge to safeguard personal and financial information. Additionally, you will gain valuable insights to advise clients on how to prevent and respond to current scams.
